Book: The Boy Next Door

BOOK REVIEW

Brandon and Zach have been friends for as long as they can remember. They love next door to each other and spend all of their time together. There is only one thing that they haven’t shared, their feelings for one another. They have shared childhood questions and physical experimentation up until just recently. Zach and Brandon are about to graduate from high school and a scared about how others will look at them, especially their fathers.

Brandon is worried about how Zach would react if he ever realized just how much he loves his best friend. Another boy in school is bullied all of the time and they only think that he is gay. Summer is about to begin and a sneaked nighttime nude swim ends up hot and heavy when Zach and Brandon finally express their feelings in a scene that is both erotic and sweet, as first love always is. Unfortunately, true love can have many obstacles and when Zach and Brandon’s family’s learn about their feelings they are torn apart never to see each other again. Will Brandon and Zach have a second chance at true love or will their love remain as a childhood memory?

Ms. Hauser created a poignant story about young love that stood the test of time. Zach’s father reacted as many men would when learning about a son’s homosexuality. The trauma Zach went through is one that many people in the same situation have. It is too bad that more people can’t be like Brandon’s family to love their child no matter what happens. The love that Brandon and Zach felt for each other was very strong and deep. I loved reliving my teenage years through their eyes, all of the fun, pain and ridiculous behavior that is prevalent in high school. I would enjoy reading more about the lives of Zach and Brandon as they start their lives together. Thanks go to Ms. Hauser for another remarkable story.
