Chapter 1

Former LAPD Police Lieutenant Billy Sharpe waited for the black town-car to come to a full stop. Once it did, he handed Dean, the driver, a cash tip. “Thanks, Dean.”
“No problem, Lieutenant.” Dean made a move to get out and open Billy’s car door.
“I got it.” Billy shouldered an overnight bag and climbed out of the back seat. He shut the door and stood in front of his and his husband, Hollywood actor, Alexander Mark Richfield’s home in Bel Air, California while Dean drove off.
Yes, he and Alex owned this four-bedroom home, but, Billy and Alex currently lived in Northern California, in Paradise.
Not wanting to be here, unhappy he was back in LA, Billy noticed his nephew’s 1960 cammo-painted Mighty Mite Jeep in the driveway. It appeared while he and Alexander moved their things into Alex’s father’s thirteen-bedroom mansion, Matt Nolf had moved into this home.
A young transgendered Swedish actress, Tadzio Andresen, was a close friend of theirs, especially, Alex. She lived fulltime at the home, and had recently divorced Steve Miller.
Miller, Mark Antonious Richfield’s ex-husband, also lived at the estate in Paradise.
(Are you with me so far?)
Billy lowered his head to the wind coming from the Pacific Ocean. It was spring and that meant some wily weather. He had flown here in a chopper, and it wasn’t fun.
The damn thing shifted around so much he’d been clenching his jaw for the entire flight.
But, it was the fastest way to get from Butte County to LA County.
The estate had a heli-stop in the meadow behind the huge mansion.
Billy patted his pocket for his key, but didn’t have it. He had hurried here because Alex was sinking…again.
He rapped his knuckles on the door and tried to be patient.
“Billy!” Alex opened it and lunged for him, hugging him.
“All right, Alex.” Billy embraced him and caught the scent of food in the home. He glanced over Alex’s shoulder and Tadzio, with her blonde hair pinned up, was setting the table, while his nephew, Matt was watching TV in the living room.
Billy kissed his young husband’s cheek and then took a deep breath. “Hi, Matt. Tadzio.”
“Hey, Uncle Billy.”
“Hi, Billy!” Tadzio waved from the open-planned kitchen.
Billy carried his bag to his and Alex’s bedroom. He set it on a chair near the bed and entered the bathroom to wash his hands and relieve himself.
Alex followed.
Billy checked his face. He was fifty-one, retired from the LAPD, and helping Mark with his three very young children while Mark’s second husband, Stan Charles Richfield, was here, in LA, beginning filming on a new George Ford mega-Viet Nam War film, A Year at An Khê.
