Book: Changing Times

EXCERPT FROM BOOK
In uniform, on his drive to the Santa Monica police station, Billy noticed Steve sitting in the car in the open garage. He and Alex lived down the street, often running into Mark and Steve as they came and went. At first Billy assumed Steve was waiting for Mark, then, Mark popped up. Steve had obviously spotted Billy in his rearview mirror.
Both he and Mark approached him.
“You lucky fuck.” Billy put his car in park and rolled his window down as he watched Steve buckle his leather trouser belt, tucking in his dress shirt.
“Hullo, my pet.” Mark crouched down by the open window.
“Hello, gorgeous.” Billy looked up at Steve as he stood behind Mark. “In the garage? Weren’t you two just in bed?”
Steve opened his mouth, gestured to the house, and then said, “Never mind.”
“How are you, Billy, after the horrid news last night.” Mark held onto the open window frame for balance.
“It sucks. I saw Jeff and Mickey on the news this morning. I have no idea why Mickey showed up.”
Steve leaned down to speak to him. “My guess is they were in bed together when Jeff got the call from homicide. Mickey probably just went along to help.”
“Stupid fucks.” Billy stared at a car driving by. The occupant was gawking at them. Since Mark and Alex were celebrities, getting photographed and videotaped was common. So far, their homes had been respected and they weren’t hounded here.
“I do hope they realize what they have done.” Mark ran his hand back through his hair, and then looked at his hand, as if he may have Steve’s spunk on it.
“Fucking Richfield.” Billy smiled.
Steve appeared confused, then obviously got it. “Didn’t you swallow all of it?”
“Oy! Behave!” Mark addressed Billy, “He’s like a horny teenager.”
“Boohoo. Fuck you.” Billy made sure no one was taking photos of them, scanning their surroundings. “What are you guys doing tonight?”
“Adam and Jack are coming for dinner,” Steve said.
“You are welcome.” Mark stood, resting his hand on the car’s roof.
“I’ll let you know. I don’t think Alex is working late.”
“Speaking of late.” Steve tapped his wristwatch.
“Yes. We need to go.” Mark smiled at Billy. “You look smart in your uniform.”
“Be careful or I’ll have you suck my dick too.”
Mark leaned in and gave Billy a kiss.
“You smell like Steve!” He laughed, since it was funny. He could hear Steve cracking up as he returned to his car.
Mark lingered near him, and the gaze of those catlike green eyes always made Billy horny. “Yes?”
“Do be careful.”
“Always. Love you.”
“And you.” Mark backed up and stood tall, looking like a runway model in his designer clothing.
Billy waved and drove off with the intention of heading to the LAPD’s homicide office before his own. He used to be an LAPD captain, until he switched departments. After the two LAPD detective/cops investigated the homicide last night, Billy figured Mickey and Jeff were most likely still doing paperwork.
He needed to see them, knowing he and a few of his men, would offer to go to the funeral.

Mark removed his suit jacket and draped it over the seat between himself and Steve. As Steve finally got them on the road to downtown LA, Mark took his phone out of his pocket to see if anyone had sent him a text. Nothing more came from Jeff.
Steve entered the highway ramp and it was moving, slowly, but at least not at a standstill. He put his hand on Mark’s leg, holding onto him. “Does Alex have any new films scheduled?”
“I don’t know. He wrapped the last one with Diesel VanDen. I suspect it will be premiering sooner or later.”
“Fucking Alex.”
Mark stared at Steve’s profile. “Fucking Alex?”
“I still can’t believe he had an affair with Diesel.”
“Steven.” Mark narrowed his eyes at him. “Please don’t mention it again.”
“It’s just you and me here.”
“Still.” Mark scrolled through his text messages, wondering how his son was doing, and if he was behaving badly.
“We need to fuck Billy again.”
“Officer Miller! You have a one-track mind!”
“No. At the moment, I’ve got a few extra tracks.”
“Yes, and all roads lead to you getting off.” Mark sent his son a message. ‘How are you?’
“Not really. I want you to get off too.”
“Do shut up.” Mark read a text from Alex, ‘Okay.’
‘I feel as if I haven’t seen you in some time. Would you and Billy like to join Jack and Adam and ourselves for dinner tonight?’
‘can I let you know?’
‘Of course.’
Steve slowed for their exit ramp. “Are you texting Alex?”
“Yes. I’ve invited him to dinner.” Mark sighed tiredly as they hit the downtown traffic.
Steve placed both hands on the wheel and didn’t comment.
Mark thought about his photo shoot this weekend with the car manufacturer, wondering if he needed Billy or Steve to join him. Ever since they began to accompany him, Drew stopped showing up.
Mark shivered in disgust at his nightmare, and rubbed his upper arm.
“Cold?” Steve adjusted the heater to blow warmer.
“I’m fine.” Mark stared into space as Steve pulled into the parking garage of their office.
